William Scott - Toowoomba

When Toowoomba’s William Scott joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 2007 he was following in the footsteps of his mum, dad and younger brother.

The Saint Mary’s College graduate was eager to travel the world and get paid to do it.

Since then he’s participated in multi-national Exercises RIMPAC 2008 in Hawaii and Talisman Sabre 2011 in San Diego, USA. Now he’s on duty at the command centre of the multi-national naval task force in the Middle East.

William specialised in communications and information systems, which ranges from satellites to VHF radios or signal flags that Captain Cook would have recognised.

“Being involved in a Command Centre has been fantastic,” said William. “It’s good to see a totally different side to the Navy, working in a real time operation from Headquarters instead of being on a ship.”

The Centre is responsible for maritime security operations (including pirate and smuggling patrols) in the Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

When this mission is over, William is looking forward to a few beers with family in Toowoomba and rewarding himself (and spoiling his girlfriend) with a well earned holiday in Fiji.
