Alexander Kenley - Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay’s Alexander Kenley was looking for a job that combined his passion for travel with work in information technology. Now he’s with 180 shipmates aboard HMAS PARRAMATTA, on pirate patrol off the Horn of Africa.

Promoted to Able Seaman, Alexander has completed four years in uniform, starting at the Naval recruit school HMAS Cerberus on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula where he specialised in communications.

“Aboard HMAS Parramatta my job has three main roles, including helping manage the communication and information technology systems,” Alexander said.

“One of the great parts about a job with the Navy is the places you can travel to.”

“I’ve already done two large deployments to South East Asia and now it’s the Middle East.”

Whilst he is enjoying his time on patrol, Alexander has also got a special reason for returning home.

“I’m about to get married so I am looking forward to that,” Alexander said.

“I will also spend as much time with family as possible before I look to move to Darwin where I hope to work on border protection.”

Since departing Sydney on 26 September 2011 Alex and his shipmates have alreadyconducted maritime security operations in the Gulf region and around the Horn of Africa; including counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations in the Gulf of Aden; and supported counter-terrorism activities.

This is the 27th rotation by a RAN ship to the Middle East area of operations since 2001.
