Brendan Cox - MACKAY GAP YEAR RECRUIT FOLLOWS IN GRANDFATHER’S STEPS

Former Mackay North High student, Private Brendan Cox, is following a family tradition on his way to becoming an Infantry Rifleman with the Army.

Private Cox joined the Army as part of the Australian Defence Force Gap Year for the experience the opportunity offered.

“Both my Grandfathers served in the military,” Private Cox said.

“One of them was commissioned after the war as a rifleman in El Alamein and the other was an Air Force mechanic.”

With his parents and sister attending his first march-out parade from the Army Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka on Friday 28 March, Private Cox is keen to share the lessons he has already learnt from the Army.

“Army life has a sense of urgency about it and you need to learn self-discipline and respect the traditions.”

A member of the Magpies Cricket Club back home and keen NRL Cowboys fan, Private Cox has undertaken demanding physical training as part of the program as well as field craft, weapons, drills and first aid.

“I enjoyed the wide variety of things we did in training, but the early mornings were very challenging.”

Private Cox will continue his training at the School of Infantry before being posted to a Land Command unit.
