Rachel Brennan - LOCAL COOKTOWN SOLDIER PLAYS PART IN TIMOR PEACE

Local Cooktown soldier Rachel Brennan has recently returned home after spending nearly one month in the sweltering tropical heat of Timor Leste. She’s part of the Australian Government response to help restore peace to that country.

These days Rachel, a former student of Cooktown State High School, is a Corporal in the Army with 3 Combat Services Support Battalion, based in Townsville. But for the last month she’s been part of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Timor Leste.

Rachel first joined the Army in 2003, and this was her second tour of duty in Timor Leste.

“I also deployed to Timor Leste in 2006. My role has been to conduct Psychology screens for Australian Defence Force members returning to Australia.

“Although we didn’t spend long in Timor Leste, we really enjoyed both the work and the opportunities and challenges of being deployed,” Rachel said.

“I won’t forget flying in the back of a Blackhawk helicopter while they were practicing some tactical flying.

“I have also really enjoyed returning to Timor Leste and seeing the progress made. Seeing the locals shopping in marketplaces and knowing that they feel safe to do so is great,” Rachel said.

Rachel’s deployment also continues a family tradition of military service. “My father served in the Infantry Corps for his National Service. He was trained as a sniper,” Rachel said.

When she is at home, Rachel loves seeing her boyfriend Adam, and spending time with her nephews and niece. Rachel also enjoys running and reading.

“I’ve been in Defence for several years now and think that I’ll stay for a couple more. Defence has provided me with several opportunities so far and there are certainly several more goals I’d like to reach,” Rachel said.

Rachel is one of about 850 Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving in Timor Leste as part of Operation Astute, the Australian Government response to the Timorese Government request for assistance in restoring peace to their country.

As part of the International Stabilisation Force the Australians are assisting the Government of Timor Leste and the United Nations Police to provide a secure environment for all East Timorese.
