Dan Wright - THE WRIGHT SOLDIER FOR THE JOBThese days Dan, 24, is a Cavalry Officer and normally based in Darwin . But now he's leading armoured vehicle patrols over a land where 6,000 years earlier the Sumerians established the first known civilization.
"This is my first operational deployment and I am enjoying the challenge immensely," Dan said. "I'm three months into a six month deployment.
"One fascinating aspect of the job is that I often meet with tribal leaders and village sheikhs to discuss the security situation. We also talk about the locals' requirement for Australian-funded community development projects.
"I proud to be part of Australia 's effort to help the Iraqi people build a better future for themselves," he said.
"My parents, John, Jayne and sister Ruth are very proud of what I'm doing in Iraq. I'm looking forward to telling my family and friends about my experiences and the very good work that Australia is doing in Iraq."
Dan is one of 1575 members of the Australian Defence Force who are now on duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Catalyst, the Australian Government's contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq.
Working with the Iraqi Government and coalition forces, Australian military personnel are continuing to work for a more secure environment and assist with national rehabilitation programs.
As well as supporting Iraqi security forces, the Australian Battle Group is project managing many reconstruction projects. More than 50 Australian projects have been completed, with more under way. These include water and irrigation projects, rural projects to enhance crop and animal production, health clinics, and power supply initiatives.
