Heidi Layland - Bomaderry

Bomaderry’s Heidi Layland, was a young mum when she took on a new career and unlike most mothers she needed some unique baby sitters. Heidi joined the Navy in 2001 when her son, Adam, was just eight and soon went to sea.

Leading Seaman Layland has had various postings around Australia. When she was required to serve at sea, Adam lived with his grandparents, Jenny and Andrew Layland, in Bomaderry.

When Heidi joined the Navy she was slightly older than the average age in her intake but that didn’t stop her.

“I was the only mother in my intake but there were a few fathers. My son Adam was eight. He was at the right age for me to embark on my chosen career,” Heidi said.

“The Navy has been flexible with working hours to support me and my son. My parents have been very supportive in helping me to progress my career,” said Leading Seaman Layland.

Every member of the crew has an important job that contributes to the running of the ship. Onboard HMAS Parramatta, Leading Seaman Layland is the Commanding Officers Maritime Logistics Steward and also runs the ships canteen, which is vital to the ships morale.

“I enjoy where the Navy has taken me with my job, meeting new people. No day is alike. I am really looking forward to this trip, we will visit ports I have not been to before,” Heidi said.

Upon HMAS Parramatta’s return to Fleet Base East, Sydney, Leading Seaman Layland will be posting ashore to HMAS Kuttabul Wardroom in Sydney to take a well deserved promotion to the rank of Petty Officer.

Heidi is about to embark on another voyage when HMAS Parramatta sets sail for South East Asia. Her son Adam, is now a young man.
