Adam King - Cessnock soldier joins boss on exercise

Cessnock resident, Adam King, has swapped his civvies for cams and is leading a team of men an women assisting in providing law and order in the Solomon Islands.

Adam is a Major in the Army Reserves and had an opportunity to demonstrate to his employer what life is like being deployed with the Australian Defence Force during Exercise Boss Lift 2013.

Major King said he felt privileged to bring a team of men and women together and lead them overseas.

“It’s the thing I’ll always remember,” he said.

Major King’s role while wearing his uniform involves him commanding the men and women of B Company, Combined Task Force 635 in the Solomon Islands in whichever tasks and activities are required.

A lot of the training in Solomon Islands has involved training out in the jungle – an environment unfamiliar to many Australians with the harsh humidity and the soaking rain.

Partnered with his civilian employer, David Trowbridge, Major King guided him around explaining what he had been doing as a company commander.

Major King said the task force had worked well together to pull off a really good event.

“The last few days have been great,” he said.

“This exercise gives us the opportunity to show our employers what we as reservists do and the advantages we can take back to their businesses.”

Mr David Trowbridge, Major King’s employer, took part in the exercise and said he was very interested when he first heard about it.

“The opportunity travel over here and see what work they’ve done over the last few months has been very interesting,” he said.

“The last few days have been quite rewarding, especially the field exercises.”

Major King got the chance to show what the men and women under his command were capable of with a live-fire section attack demonstration and an ambush activity out in the field.
