Cam Naughton - Heading to Afghanistan

Paddy and Wayne Naughton farm beef cattle near Moruya but Afghanistan will be on their minds for the next eight months.

Their son, Trooper Cam Naughton, 27, and 1500 fellow diggers are up in Townsville’s High Range exercise area, gearing up for Afghanistan. They go in June.

Then, for the next eight months, their job will be to help train Afghan soldiers and to help them restore peace and stability in troubled Uruzgan province.

“I joined the Reserve in 2007 out of boredom.” said Cam. “I wanted to do something and be part of a team.

“I enjoyed it so much I transferred to the Regulars in 2009.

“Now I’m a Trooper and a qualified armoured vehicle driver.

“This will be my second trip to Afghanistan. My job will be driving re-supply missions to our forward bases and doing night sentry duty from time to time.

“We’ll also be training up the Afghan Army and I enjoy trying to communicate in different languages.

“Half way through we get a break and I’ll be heading with a couple of mates for a Greek island called Zakinthos. It will be my first time in Europe.

“After Afghanistan I’ll be back in time for the next Anzac day parade - and with a much better idea of what I’ll do with my allowances.

“But one thing’s for sure – that first beer at the Bodalla Bowling Club.”
