Dylan Phillips - Call of the sea hard to resist

Port Macquarie’s Dylan Phillips was always going to end up with a career at sea, and now he’s a Lieutenant in the Navy.

After finishing at Port Macquarie High School, Dylan became involved with the volunteer sea rescue group. Now he has specialised as a Maritime Warfare Officer.

“I used to sail a lot when I was in Port Macquarie, so joining the Navy seemed a natural progression,” he said.

As a midshipman, he spent his first year at sea then went on to gain a degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

“Getting a degree through the Australian Defence Force had enormous appeal for me,” said Dylan.”

After almost 10 years in the Navy he is now the Assistant Principal Warfare Officer onboard HMAS Parramatta.

He is involved in ‘fighting the ship’ from the Operations Room, working closely with the Officer of the Watch who is responsible for navigating the ship.

He has also served as the Ship’s Boarding Officer which saw him leading boarding parties whie he was in the Middle East.

“I’ve held the role of Diving and Demolitions Officer which was a very enjoyable!” he said.

Dylan and his shipmates are currently exercising off the West Australian coast before deploying to South East Asia.
