Chris Holbert - The Need For Speed

Chris Holbert loved speed even back at Cardiff High School in 1990.

Using his own muscle-power, Chris now competes across Australia with the Australian Defence Force as a road and track cyclist.

The RAAF Corporal is also a specialist aircraft technician working on F/A 18 Hornet fighter jets, which take speed to a whole new level.

Chris is just back from the Australian International Airshow at Avalon in Victoria, but at the same time he was also training hard for the NSW Masters State Track Cycling Championships being held in mid-March.

“It was a busy week!” said Chris, “But it has really been brilliant to have so many people at the Airshow, all wanting to know about the Hornet — and the RAAF,” he said.

This was the first Australian International Airshow Chris has attended, but he is already looking forward to the next one.

Chris was a late starter who didn’t join the RAAF until 2001, after working as a mechanical engineer. After completing his specialist trade training, Chris has been with Newcastle’s 77 Squadron ever since.

“I wanted a change and to do something challenging and exciting, so the Air Force seemed the logical place for me. It has been fantastic.

“I am involved with the maintenance of the engine and airframe, the day-to-day servicing. It is a real challenge working on such a sophisticated fast jet,” he said. “And the family are just up the road.”

Another highlight for Chris has been taking part in US Air Force exercises in Nevada.

“I have been twice and they have been stand-out experiences. The environment is incredible,” he said.

The F/A-18 Hornet is a multi-role fighter designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It is capable of air interception, air combat, close air support of ground troops, and interdiction of enemy supply lines including shipping.
