Tim Darragh - Dapto's Soldier Son
Dapto’s Tim Darragh, 22, joined the Army to see the world and he’s already 4000kms away in Darwin. This time next year he could be anywhere.
But it’s taken a lot of hard work to get this far.
Tim said goodbye to his mum Kimm back in January 2007. Four years later he has graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Australian Defence Force Academy, followed by more time at the Royal Military College Duntroon.
“After Dapto High School I was looking to continue my education, but was also interested in a challenging career,” said Tim.
“My uncle had served in Army Signals, and I also thought that courage and loyalty were good values for any organisation to have.”
Tim soon found out it wasn’t just about classroom learning.
“Being cold, wet, tired and hungry but still managing to smile and laugh with your mates around who are also doing it tough — that was one of the best parts,” said Tim.
Now the Dapto Digger is fully-fledged Army Lieutenant. He has specialised in Ordnance (ammunition and explosives) and is commanding his first platoon in Darwin.
And he hasn’t had to say goodbye to his love of sport. He’s already been selected for the Australian Defence Force national netball team.
“In a few years I could be anywhere, doing anything,” said Tim.
“But now I’ve got through my own basic training I’d also like to help the new recruits at Kapooka get through theirs.
“They will look back on their passing out parade as a high point in their life so far — just like I do.”
