Michael Davies - Sawtell Soldier is Desert Money Man

Sawtell’s Captain Michael Davies, 40, is now on duty in southern Iraq. He is the Finance Officer for the 500-strong Australian Battle Group based at Tallil in Dhi Qar province.

He and his specialist team of administrators are the quiet achievers — working in the background to ensure all the ‘i’s are dotted and the ‘t’s are crossed, so that no-one on desert patrol ever runs out of anything.

Michael’s contracts with provincial suppliers are also a factor in boosting the local economy.

Michael and the rest of the Battle Group will be heading home at the end of June, and responsibility for Dhi Qar and Al Muthanna provinces has already been handed over to re-trained Iraqi troops.

As well as supporting Iraqi security forces, the Australian Battle Group has been project managing many reconstruction projects. More than 20 Australian projects have been completed, with more under way.  These include water and irrigation projects, rural projects to enhance crop and animal production, health clinics, and power supply initiatives.

Water purification is particularly important as water-borne diseases are a major killer, especially of young children.
