Sergeant Tim Blad

With Christmas around the corner, the amount of mail being sent to troops in the Middle East will more than triple, according to Postmaster Sergeant Tim Blad.

A cargo specialist with the Army for 17 years, this is the second time the former Holroyd SHS student has deployed on operations as a “postie”.

“We can expect to see the start of a surge in mid November,” Sgt Blad said.

A busy day would normally be about 90 bags in and 50 out, each bag weighing somewhere between 12 – 15kg on average.

With the increase from Christmas mail, he said “we’re expecting about 20 tonnes of mail in,” or as many as 360 bags per day.

“At Christmas time we’ll probably kick off at six in the morning and be finishing at about 2300. So they’re going to be pretty big days for us, but it’s part and parcel of the job.”

Sgt Blad is responsible for distributing mail to the various locations that Australian personnel are operating in the Middle East.

“It’s really important for guys to get their mail as quickly as they can,” he said.
