PTE Kyle Dawes - YOUNG SOLDIER IS DRIVEN TO SUCCESS

Private Kyle Dawes is a soldier who’s decided he doesn’t want to spend any more time in the Army Reserve.

The 19 year old from Cowra New South Wales, who serves with the 1 st/19 th Royal New South Wales Regiment, is involved in Operation DELUGE as a member of the Security Task Group who provide low risk searches and checkpoint security during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in Sydney from the 2 nd to the 9 th of August.

“I’ve decided to join the Regular Army and make it a career,” Kyle said.

The Private, joined the Army Reserve in 2006 to see whether he’d like to take up service in the Regular Army as career.

“I have a lot of friends to decided to join the Reserves and they couldn’t stop talking about how good it was , so I decided to see for myself,” he said.

Kyle and his friends have been on quite a number of operations and are looking forward to getting their first overseas deployment.

“Operation’s like DELUGE are great experiences and offer the chance to put into practise skill’s we’re likely to use overseas, ” Kyle said.

After signing on to the Regular Army, Jarrod will go to the School of Infantry, in Singleton (NSW) before moving onto his first posting, but he’s already looking ahead.

“ My ultimate goal is to join the Special Forces, the challenge it offers interests me a lot, however in the meantime I’d like to join a reconnaissance unit and build my skills up further,” he said.

Kyle is one of approximately 1500 Defence personnel deployed as part of Operation DELUGE, to support the security aspects of the APEC 07 Leaders’ Meetings in Sydney during September.

The Australian Defence Force will act in support of the NSW Police and other government agencies as part of the overall security arrangements for the APEC 07 Leaders’ meetings.

A range of capabilities will be in place throughout the period of the meetings in support of the New South Wales Police to ensure that Australia stages a safe, secure and successful event for the delegates.
