Chris Mapstone - BanksLast week was a busy time for Chris Mapstone, 30, from Banks.
The Army Corporal was in South Korea as part of Australia’s Federation Guard contingent at ceremonies to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Australian involvement in the Korean War (1950-53).
The UN-led international force’s first task was to help South Korea push back the North Korean invaders, and later it had to contend with human wave attacks by Communist Chinese reinforcements.
After the Battle of Kapyong, the Third Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR), was awarded a US Presidential Citation for its outstanding bravery.
“There’s a family connection with Korea and the Third Battalion,” said Chris. “Dad was in 3 RAR, and I followed him into the same Battalion. My Pop was RAAF, and even my step-mum is Army.”
The Erindale College graduate specialised in Mortars before volunteering for the Canberra-based Federation Guard. The ceremonial unit includes Navy, Army and RAAF members who all are hand picked to represent the ADF.
“I was posted to the Guard in 2010,” said Chris. “I’m the unit’s Physical Training Instructor and I enjoy keeping everyone fit.
“I have already deployed to France twice during this posting — once to Villers-Bretonneux for ANZAC Day, and once to Fromelles where 250 Australian and British World War I soldiers had been recovered from the mass grave at Pheasant Wood and were re-interred with full military honours by members of the Guard.
“But with such a strong connection to Korea I was so honoured to be chosen to represent the ADF there ceremonially. I also enjoyed the battlefield tours we between the six commemorative ceremonies.
“It is always a good feeling when you represent your country,” Chris said. “We remember what we are there for, and it can be pretty emotional sometimes.
“But there’s a lighter side too. I’ll definitely be bringing back presents for my four kids!”
