Before
it was broken down and scrapped in 1973, the original HMAS Kanimbla
held a close connection with the Indonesian people as it was known to
them as the "Oriental Queen".
After decommissioning
in 1949, it was chartered by the Indonesian Government to transport
its people making the pilgrimage to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

In a farewell
speech to the ADF personnel onboard the current HMAS Kanimbla on January
7, Governor-General Michael Jeffery acknowledged that connection and
highlighted the ship's newest role.
"Your
cargo today may not be pilgrims, but the supplies, equipment and skills
you are delivering will answer many prayers," he said.
"In
trying to come to grips with the emotional aftermath of this huge disaster,
many Australians are finding consolation in our country's generosity,
resolve and spirit as represented through the well orchestrated work
of the ADF.
"Your
professionalism, your enthusiasm and your compassion are to be admired.
"The
prayers of our nation go with you. God speed, and do a mighty good job
for the region and your country.
