HMAS Kanimbla continues on station off the island of Nias

The Royal Australian Navy amphibious transport ship HMAS Kanimbla continues on station off the island of Nias supporting humanitarian relief operations led by the Indonesian Government following a severe earthquake which hit the region on 29 March 2005. Kanimbla's complement includes Navy and Army medical teams who continue helping Nias islanders after nine of their own comrades were killed in a helicopter accident while on a relief mission on 2 April. Kanimbla is deployed under phase 2 of Operation Sumatra Assist -- the Australian Government response to the Indonesian Government's requests for assistance with tsunami and earthquake disaster relief in the Sumatra region.
