The amphibious transport ship HMAS Kanimbla has been sent with a complement of 466 men and women, including 150 Australian Army engineers, to assist the Indonesian Government tsunami relief programme on the island of Sumatra. The ship is carrying 780 tonnes of equipment and vehicles as well as two Sea King helicopters and two large landing craft (LCM8). She is due to take up station off the coast of Aceh from 13 January 2005.

At the request of the Government of Indonesia, the ADF's assistance is being provided as part of a cooperative national effort involving a range of Australian Government agencies
