05 August 2006 Evacuation of Australian Nationals from Lebanon
Possibly one of the last Australian Government chartered ships to take Australian nationals out of Beirut, the San Gwann, transported approximately 300 evacuees to Larnaka Port, Cyprus. The majority of these evacuees are on their way to Sydney on a government chartered flight today.
Members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) have been deployed to support the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in the evacuation of Australian Nationals from Lebanon.
The specialist ADF staff are assisting DFAT in Beirut, Turkey and Cyprus.
