27 July 2006 Australian servicemen and women help evacuees
Members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) deployed to Beirut and Cyprus from Sydney International Airport today. The 65 members of the ADF are being deployed to support the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the evacuation of Australian nations from Lebanon. The ADF group includes specialist staff to conduct liaison and evacuee processing support.

Evacuees from Lebanon have their passports checked on arrival at the evacuation centre at Larnaka Port. Australian citizens who wish to leave Lebanon are being evacuated by sea, to Larnaka in Cyprus and Mersin in Turkey

Medical staff are on hand at the Evacuation Handling Centre at Larnaka Port to deal with everything from minor/major injuries to headaches. Here the team, made up of a medic, Dr and Nurse, assess a teenager with possible shrapnel damage to his eye.
