Lieutenant Colonel Shaun Justin Paul Love

Shaun Love was born in Canberra on 17 February 1969. After completing his secondary education at St Edmund’s College in Canberra, he joined the Army in 1987 entering the Australian Defence Force Academy where he studied a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated in 1989. After a further twelve months at the Royal Military College he graduated to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals in December 1990. His initial appointment was as a Troop Commander in the 1st Signal Regiment from 1991-1992. He further served with the 103rd Signal Squadron as Operations Officer and Second-in-Command, and held sub-unit command of 71 Electronic Warfare Squadron, in the 7th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare). He was appointed and took command of the 1st Joint Support Unit in January 2006, and the 1st Signal Regiment in September of the same year until December 2007. Lieutenant Colonel Love assumed his position as Commander Australian Contingent and Deputy Chief of Operations – Current Operations with the Multinational Force and Observers, Sinai Peninsula, in January 2008.

In his first tenure at the 1st Signal Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Love was selected to deploy on the United Nations Mission to the Western Sahara (MINURSO) as part of the 3rd Australian Contingent. Other overseas deployments have included X6 to ADF drought relief operation to Irian Jaya (OP AUSINDOJAYA) in 1998, Operations Officer 103rd Signal Squadron in East Timor on Operation WARDEN in 1999, and J63 with the Australian National Headquarters in the Middle East (Iraq) as part of Operations BASTILLE, FALCONER, and CATALYST in 2003.

Lieutenant Colonel Love’s training and staff appointments include Headquarters Northern Command, the Australian Defence Force Academy, Senior Instructor/Officer Commanding Advanced Training Wing, Defence Force School of Signals, and as Staff Officer Grade One Communications Information Systems and Electronic Warfare, Army Headquarters. He attended Australian Command and Staff College in 2002.
Lieutenant Colonel Love holds an undergraduate Arts degree (awarded by the University of New South Wales) and a Masters of Management, along with various graduate qualifications.
Lieutenant Colonel Love has been awarded the following service medals:

  1. Australian Active Service Medal with clasps East Timor, Iraq, and International Coalition Against Terrorism.
  2. Australian Service Medal with clasp Western Sahara.
  3. Iraq 2003 Campaign Medal
  4. International Force East Timor Campaign Medal 1999
  5. Defence Force Service Medal with clasp
  6. Australian Defence Medal
  7. United Nations Medal Western Sahara

Lieutenant Colonel Love holds two Service Commendations: Commander Northern Command presented in 1995, and a Chief of Defence Force presented in 2003.
Lieutenant Colonel Love is married to Sandi, and they have three children, Christopher, Jessica, and Patrick.
Lieutenant Colonel Love has represented at State and ADF level in field hockey as a goalkeeper, and now enjoys an unhealthy interest in multi-sport training. Sandi is a full-time mother, educator and piano tutor.
