Defence Minister and Chief of Defence Force tour Middle East

The Minister for Defence, Senator Robert Hill, and the Chief of the Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove, travelled to Baghdad recently to meet with the US Administrator in Iraq, retired General Jay Garner.
They met with General Garner, who heads the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance in Iraq, to discuss the rebuilding of the country and the restoring of basic services as soon as possible.
Senator Hill told General Garner that Australia had already nominated specialist areas in which it could contribute to the reconstruction effort.
Following this meeting, Senator Hill and General Cosgrove visited Australian Defence Force personnel in Baghdad and thanked them for their highly professional and successful mission.
