Commandos
patrol and clear Iraqi airfield
Australian
soldiers from the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (Commando)
patrol and clear buildings and infrastructure in a major Iraqi airbase
in western Iraq.
Australian Special Forces seized the base several days ago and are continuing
to clear it of enemy threats.
The Commandos discovered a vast array of Iraqi military infrastructure
including weapons, MIG fighter jets and other military hardware, a vast
array of bombs and missiles, together with Iraqi intelligence.
Whilst the base has now been deserted by its former Iraqi military occupiers,
the Australian Commandos remain on high alert and are well prepared
for a range of contingencies.
4RAR (Commando) is an important part of the Special Operations Command
and its tasks remain critical to the success of the mission. Additional
capabilities, which bring specialist engineer experience in chemical
and biological weapons and Explosive Ordnance Disposal are also important
elements of the SFTG and deployed SF operations.
Australian Medical personnel continue to provide immediate first aid
and medical treatment for SFTG members working inside Iraq. High on
the Commandos' list is Weapons of Mass Destruction and while to date
nothing has been uncovered the search for WMD will continue until the
Australian Government indicates that hostilities in Iraq have ceased
and that the search for these weapons is no longer required.
