On Operation in Baghdad

Australian Light Armour Vehicles (ASLAVS) recently arrived in Baghdad to assist in the provision of security for Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) personnel during the restructuring phase in Iraq. The ASLAVS and personnel, from the 2nd Calvary Regiment in Darwin, will continue force protection duties in Baghdad, gradually replacing the soldiers and vehicles from 4RAR (Cdo) who are due to depart on the long journey home. The ASLAV troop and the 2nd Battalion are providing support to the Australian National Headquarters (Baghdad), and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade during the restructuring phase within Iraq.

A team of ADF Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists also arrived in Baghdad to assist Coalition forces with the removal of some of the thousands of unexploded rounds littering the city streets and parks. This task was carried out on a major highway and soccer ground near the Australian Representative Office. Hundreds of mortar and rocket propelled grenade rounds were strewn from an Iraqi ammunition truck hit during the war. The rounds, which also included volatile white phosphorus shells, had littered a local soccer ground and many had been removed by children. With Light Armoured Vehicles from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment providing security, the EOD team carried out the removal of the rounds over four days
