The Australian Army Training Team - Iraq

Conducting counter-insurgency operations is how the Iraqi Army's 2nd Brigade of the 10th Division is demonstrating its abilities.

The Army Training Team-Iraq (AATT-I), a component of the Al Muthanna Task Group (AMTG) has spent the last month conducting an audit of the Iraqi Brigade's capabilities and has made in-roads in their training mission.

While it has begun basic training on individual soldier's skills, the Brigade has also planned and begun conducting up to company-level counter-insurgency operations as a flow on from OPERATION LIGHTNING, a Coalition and Iraqi Security Force crack-down on insurgents in Iraq.

The Commanding Officer of the AATT-I, LTCOL Steve Tulley said that he had been encouraged by the level of basic training and their ability to conduct low-level operations.

LTCOL Tulley was particularly impressed with the fact that the Iraqi Army conducts operations in a multi-jurisdictional environment, with the Iraqi Army working closely with the Iraqi Police Service.
