Community function in As Samawah with a theme of peace and fellowship

A collective of almost 100 leading citizens from As Samawah, representing humanitarian groups, academics, tribal sheiks, teachers, engineers, civic leaders and members of the community welcomed the Australian contingent of the Al Muthanna Task Group (AMTG) to the province with an "acquaintance and friendship" party on Friday, 17 June 2005.

The function was organised and hosted by members of the Iraqi Council for Peace and Solidarity, a non-government organisation which promotes tolerance, friendship, human rights and the Iraqi people's determination of their own destiny.

The Commanding Officer of the AMTG, Lieutenant Colonel Roger Noble, said the group thanked Australia for help in "liberating the Iraqi people" from dictatorship.
