Operation ASTUTE is the Australian Government's response to assist the Government of Timor Leste. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has about 1000 personnel working with the New Zealand Defence Force to assist the Government of Timor Leste to bring security, peace and confidence to the people of Timor Leste.
The ADF's mission is to assist the Government of Timor Leste to stabilise the situation and facilitate the concentration of the various conflicting groups into safe and secure locations to create a secure environment for the conduct of a successful dialogue to resolve the current crisis.
International police including Australian Federal Police (AFP), Malaysian Police, New Zealand Police and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) from Portugal, provide security in Dili.
The ADF stands ready to support the police as required.
