Barbeque luncheon at Garden Island

The Prime Minister, Hon John Howard MP and the US President, George W Bush took time away from their hectic APEC schedule to attend a barbeque function at the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre at Garden Island to "thank the troops" who have served on operations overseas.

The President and Prime Minister participated in a traditional Aussie BBQ. They queued with the troops for their lunch and then sat amongst them to thank them for their commitment to operations in the Middle east as part of Operations CATALYST and SLIPPER.

Mr Howard and Mr Bush took time to speak to all who attended the function and posed for photographs to capture that much coveted memento.

Attendees at the event represented Navy, Army, Air Force and the Australian Public Service members who had served overseas in the Middle East.

The Australian Government is hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum (APEC 2007) in Sydney.

The ADF is acting in support of the NSW Police Force and other government agencies as part of the overall security arrangements for the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Conference 2007 Leaders meetings.

The ADF is providing approximately 1500 people as part of Operation Deluge, which is supporting the security aspects of APEC 07.

A range of capabilities will be in place throughout the period of the meetings to ensure Australia stages a safe, secure and successful event for the delegates.
