Understanding sealed between ADF and NSW Police

An important Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference milestone has passed with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the New South Wales Police Force.

The MOU sets in stone the accepted administrative arrangements, particularly command and control in provision of security support. Signatories to the agreement are Operation DELUGE Commander Brigadier Andrew Smith and New South Wales Police Force Chief Superintendent Peter Lennon. The memorandum’s signing was witnessed by the Attorney-General, Mr Philip Ruddock.

Accompanying the signing was a demonstration of the capabilities made available to support APEC 07, being held from 2-9 September in Sydney. On hand was the Royal Australian Navy Mine Hunter HMAS Yarra, the Australian Navy Clearance Diving Team One (CDT1), an Australian Army Security Task Group (STG) low-level search team and Police assets. The ceremony culminated in the flypast of an F/A-18 fighter.

The ADF will act in support of the NSW Police and other government agencies as part of the overall security arrangements for the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Conference 2007 Leaders' meetings.

The ADF is providing approximately 1500 people along with a range of equipment as part of Operation Deluge to support the security aspects of the APEC 07 Leaders' Meetings in Sydney during September.
