Support to Security at M2006

The Australian Government is providing significant Commonwealth assets from a range of agencies to assist Victoria Police in securing the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Within this overall support, the Department of Defence, under Operation Acolyte, will be providing about 2600 personnel, of which the bulk will be providing support to security operations as follows:

  • About 1200 service personnel to directly assist Victoria Police with searching venues, operating vehicle checkpoints, responding to bomb threats and clearing any underwater parts of venues and events;
  • an Australian Defence Force Tactical Assault Group with appropriate support including Blackhawk helicopters;
  • maritime and air assets, including ships and aircraft with the capacity to intercept vessels at sea and to divert aircraft, will be available to counter specific threats should they arise; and
  • a range of chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) response assets.

The Department of Defence, through Operation Acolyte, will assist in providing world class support to ensure a safe, secure and successful staging of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
