PLEASE NOTE: The text and links contained on this page refer to a past operation. It is provided for archive purposes only. Current Operations are listed on the Global Operations webpage.

Operation TESTAMENT is the name of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribution to World Youth Day 08 (WYD08), which Sydney will be hosting in July this year.

WYD08 is the largest youth event in the world and gathers young people from around the globe to build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures.

ADF personnel will be providing personnel and equipment in support of WYD08 objectives in specialist and niche capabilities.

Operation TESTAMENT will comprise ADF personnel drawn from across the services carrying out the logistics for an international ‘Military Pilgrims’ program as well as security support to the NSW Police Force for the event.

ADF ‘Military Pilgrims’ will also play an important role as hosts to the international military pilgrims who travel to Sydney to participate. The ‘Military Pilgrims’ will attend celebrations that could attract hundreds of thousands of people to events staged at Randwick Racecourse and around the Sydney CBD.

As a lead up to WYD08, a large cross and an icon of the Virgin Mary arrived in Sydney on 1 Jul 07 and have been journeying throughout Australia from diocese to diocese, and parish to parish, to enable the various Catholic and Christian communities to prepare spiritually for WYD08.

The Australian Catholic Military Diocese has hosted the Cross and Icon at various ADF establishments throughout Australia.

At the conclusion of a week long youth festival, in his first visit to Sydney, Pope Benedict XVI, will celebrate Mass at Randwick Racecourse on Sunday 20 Jul 08, where ADF and overseas military pilgrims will be present.

The ADF’s involvement in WYD08 is symbolic of the faith, across all religions, that guides its people in Australia and overseas.
