1RAR Band wrap up a whirlwind three-week tour of the Middle East Area of Operations

From rock concerts to Carols by Candlelight, jazz sessions to trivia nights, the band of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR Band) have wrapped up a whirlwind three-week tour of the Middle East Area of Operations.

The 1 RAR Band is the only full-time band in the Defence Force that is a dedicated big band rock band.

The 15 members, which included musicians from the rock band and the front-line – or horn section - and the technical support crew, arrived in the MEAO in mid-December 2009 and performed for Australian and ISAF forces in several locations across Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Musical Director, Major Dan Hiscock, said it had been several years since any Service band, particularly an Army band, had deployed overseas under its own strength as an independent act without the assistance of celebrities through FACE tours.
