Visit by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer

NATO’s top man paid a final visit to officials in Tarin Kowt as part of a farewell tour of Afghanistan.

Outgoing NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer took the chance to meet with the new Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF) Commander Lieutenant Colonel Peter Connolly, Task Force Uruzgan Commander, Brigadier Tom Middendorp, Uruzgan Province Governor Assadullah Hamdam and other senior local officals.

The Secretary General leaves his post in August after five and a half years.

This week the 1st Battalion Battle Group (1 RAR BG) took over responsibility for the MRTF from the 7th Battalion Battle Group.

The 1 RAR BG’s main role is to mentor the Afghan National Army and manage construction works in the province.

The MRTF model has been hailed a great success and the second rotation of the task force, led by the 1 RAR BG, hopes to build on the work done by their predecessors.
