Trade Training Graduation in Train Kowt

When Australian Forces first arrived in Tarin Kowt, southern Afghanistan, to begin reconstruction works in 2006, there was an apparent lack of skilled labour in the rural province. To counter this labour shortage and to ensure that the Australian managed reconstruction works had the maximum effect on the local community, the Tarin Kowt Trade Training School was established.

Three years later, the Trade Training School is still going strong, drawing a regular and keen intake from the young men of the Uruzgan Province. Since training commenced, the School has build a strong and enduring relationship with the blossoming construction industry in the area and local engineers and construction company owners attend each graduation, looking for their new employees.

As the tour of the 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force draws to a close, local government officials and construction industry representatives were invited to join the Australian Engineers and the Battle Group’s Commanding Officer in a thank-you ceremony and traditional Afghan feast, prepared by Australian Army Cooks at FOB Ripley. A few days later these representatives revisited the camp for another Trade Training Graduation and to meet their latest prospective employees.
