Soldiers ready the bridge-building 'Meccano set'

Following the destruction of two vital bridges destroyed by insurgents in Zabol Province, southern Afghanistan, the men and woman of Australia’s 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF-1) were called upon by their NATO Allies to mobilise and repair these crossings on Afghanistan’s Highway One.

After successfully moving from their base in Tarin Kowt to Kandahar Air Field, Royal Australian Engineers of the 1st Field Squadron, began the task of stocktaking the huge amount of bridge components required to complete the mission.

As well as confirming that all the required elements of the huge 'Meccano set' were available, the engineers were responsible for packing and preparing the components before the journey to the construction sites began.
