Afghan soldiers graduate from ADF engineering course

Around 50 members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) have been trained by the Australian Defence Force to provide the vital role of combat engineering support.

Another 14 members of the ANA graduated from the course in December 2008, conducted by Australian Army Engineers with Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force One (MRTF-1).

The course taught skills such as the establishment of barbed wire, hesco bastions, concreting, sandbagging and force protection measures. It will eventually enable the ANA to conduct their own force protection measures and maintain their existing establishments without assistance from ISAF forces.

The students were given their graduating certificate during a small ceremony inside the ANA compound at the Australian-Dutch military base at Tarin Kowt, attended by the MRTF-1 commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Shane Gabriel, and the ANA soldiers' commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Akbar.
