Remembrance Day 2008

Australians and Coalition partners including British, Canadian and US personnel gathered at Camp Baker, Kandahar Airfield, for a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony to mark Armistice Day on 11 November. Berets were placed upon rifles to remember the Australian soldiers who have died on operations or were killed in action in the Middle East Area of Operations, including Warrant Officer 2 Dave Nary, Sergeant Andrew Russell, Sergeant Matthew Locke, Private Luke Worsley, Trooper David ‘Poppy Pearce’, Lance Corporal Jason Marks and Signaller Sean McCarthy.

Kandahar Airfield is home to the RAAF Control and Reporting Centre (CRC), controls southern Afghan operational airspace. The CRC comprises up to 75 personnel. The Force Level Logistics Assett, which supplies and sustains Australian operations in Afghanistan, maintains a detachment of 60 people at Kandahar. The Australian Rotary Wing Group was also based at Kandahar Airfield before it rotated back to Australia in October.
