Melbourne Cup morning

The race that stops a nation also has the power to pause overseas operations. Members of the 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force operating in southern Afghanistan started their Melbourne Cup morning, thanks to the time difference, with an Aussie barbeque. The first they have had an opportunity to enjoy since they began operations in October.

Reinforcing the larrikinism that Diggers are famous for, the soldiers then held their own race, albeit with donkeys, the Tarin Kowt Guineas.

Teams were fielded from the Task Forces various units including infantry, engineers, combat support personnel and one team was provided by their Dutch partners.
