Lance Corporal Chris Lewis

Lance Corporal Chris Lewis devoted more effort than most in preparation for his deployment with the Army to Afghanistan - he worked as a concierge at Afghan weddings in Sydney to practice his language skills and improve his understanding of the local culture.

And now the 29 year old is finding that extra effort paying off in spades as he mentors a group of Afghan National Army Engineers, working alongside Australian Sappers.

He completed the intensive 3 month Dari course at the Defence School of Languages in early 2007 and then worked at Afghan weddings part time for most of the year to improve his language skills.

He says that despite losing some of his skills in the months before deployment, he quickly got back up to speed once he was in country and working with his Afghan section, working closely with their own commander, Sergeant Firoz.
