OP SLIPPER RTF Sports Day

In superb autumn conditions the RTF held its sports day, signalling the beginning of the end to an action-packed tour.

It was a welcome day free from work commitments - for some the first since arriving in Afghanistan in March.

After a quick medal parade the blue stone was cleared from the field, the pitch rolled (we would like to think) and the touch competition kicked off. Teams from across the Task Force threw themselves around the rocks and dirt in what was a hard fought competition. Bloodied knees and hands were common and the winners - 12 Platoon over Headquarters - spilt plenty in their quest for touch immortality.

Volley ball was equally competitive with ETG being too strong for 12 Platoon.

The real crowds gathered after lunch for the strong-man competition and tug-o-war.

With muscles bulging out of unit singlets, the boys fronted up against each other to prove who the real Spartans of the Task Force were. Competition consisting of bench press, log carry, heaves, and push ups would decide.

The most impressive result came from the 77kg combat engineer, LCPL Brendan Fitzgerald, lifting an incredible 155kg on the bench, just edging out favourite CPL Jezza Cochrane.

The log carry was taken out by PTE Jared Patch, the heaves by CPL Corey Jones and the pushups by TPR Michael Downs. Special mention goes to PTE Patch, CPL Jones and CPL Igor Moravcik who performed strongly in every event.

The tug-o-war allowed well entrenched rivalries to be battled out on the grand stage that was the armoured vehicle park. Teams gathered closely around the rope to call out orders and yell abuse at the opposition. Finally 11 Platoon emerged victorious, capping off an impressive day for the boys from 1 RAR.

Australia has deployed an ADF Reconstruction Task Force (RTF), consisting of a combined arms team, to the Uruzgan Province in Southern Afghanistan as part of Operation SLIPPER.
