Engineers deliver 'magical' effect to Talani School
Children in an Uruzgan Province school have a new place to play for the first time in years.
ISAF Engineers from the Australian Reconstruction Task Force (RTF) teamed up with the Afghan National Army (ANA) recently to refurbish the local school in Talani.
As part of their quick impact project series, the Engineers conducted the work at the school in one long day, leaving smiling faces and thankful children as they quickly erected the equipment and moved on to their next task at the local Mosque on the following day.
The RTF and ANA conducted repairs to windows, installed a 4000 litre water tank, play equipment, and football goals for the children.
They also brought the latest produce from the Australians’ popular Trade Training School, where students had built tables, chairs and bookshelves to furnish the school.
Officer in charge of the project, Lieutenant Kieran Jackel, said it was extremely rewarding work.
“The project was an example of how some simple reconstruction work can provide a lasting impact on the community, ideally encouraging more students to attend school in a safe and enjoyable environment,” said Lt Jackel.
In addition to the quick impact projects and training initiatives, the RTF has a number major construction projects targeting the Provinces’ health, education, and security infrastructure. They are planned and managed by the RTF and built with a high content of local contractors, ensuring maximum local ownership of the projects, employment and vital income for the developing economy.
Current projects include the refurbishment of the Tarin Kowt Hospital and High School, as well as a river crossing to connect two sides of the town which are normally separated during times of seasonal flooding. These projects, along with a number of others, are progressing on schedule and gaining significant local community interest.
