Memorial service for the 10th anniversary of the Black Hawk tragedy, Kandahar, Afghanistan

On Monday 12 June 2006, the soldiers and officers of Australia's CH-47 (Chinook) Detachment in Kandahar, Afghanistan gathered for the official dedication ceremony of CAMP BAKER.

The ceremony also included a memorial service for the 10th anniversary of the Black Hawk tragedy, when 15 members of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) and three members of the 5th Aviation Regiment lost their lives following a mid-air collision of two Black Hawk helicopters during a night-time counter-terrorist training activity near Townsville.

The ceremony and memorial service combination was particularly poignant as CAMP BAKER is named in honour of Corporal Michael C. Baker, one of the 18 men who lost their lives in the Black Hawk tragedy.

Lieutenant Colonel Kev Humphreys, Commander of the CH-47 Detachment, and C Squadron Commander from 5th Aviation Regiment, said during the ceremony, For those of you lucky enough to have known Mick as I did, you will know that he was a professional soldier, and aviator, and highly respected by subordinates, peers, and superiors alike. He was a bloody good bloke.
