NAVY AND CUSTOMS CATCH SIXTY-ONE FOREIGN FISHERS OVER WEEKEND

Five illegal foreign fishing vessels were brought into Darwin on 16 September 2007 by Armidale Class Patrol Boat (ACPB) HMAS MAITLAND following an operation coordinated by Border Protection Command, involving Defence, Customs and Australian Fisheries Management Authority officers (AFMA).

On 14 September 2007, while conducting Operation RESOLUTE patrols, ACPB HMAS PIRIE detected and detained five foreign fishing vessels in the Australian Fishing Zone, in the vicinity of Evan’s Shoal, north of Darwin. With five vessels and fifty seven foreign fishers detained, HMAS MAITLAND was tasked to assist and took over from HMAS PIRIE to escort the fishers into Darwin.

AFMA officers requested the foreign fishing vessels along with their catch of trepang, be brought into Darwin for investigation. The crews of the foreign fishing vessels were handed over to Customs officers on arrival into Darwin for processing and transfer to Department of Immigration and Citizenship custody.
