Minister Mal Brough (Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs [FACSIA], MAJGEN David Chalmers, Dr Sue Gordon (Chair of the NT Emergency Response Task Force) and Mr Wayne Gibbon (Associate Secretary, FACSIA) visited Indigenous communities in Central Australia. The team visited Santa Teresa, Imanpa and Mutitjulu. Members of the media were in attendance and witnessed the visits first hand.

The visit was a fact finding mission focusing on making initial contact and allaying fears amongst the communities. The group were well received and the Minister engaged actively with each community outlining what the government will do to help people in the communities.

This is the Australian Government’s response to the national emergency to protect indigenous children from abuse.

This emergency response announced by the Prime Minister on Thursday 27 June 2007 aims to stabilise and protect communities in the crisis areas. This is the first stage in a longer term approach to protect and improve the welfare of Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory.

The Australian Government is responding quickly but in a structured, orderly and considered way. The aim is to improve the welfare of Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory, improving their safety, health and access to education.

Assessment teams are led by FACSIA in cooperation with other government agencies including the ADF, Centrelink, Dept of Health and Aging, Dept of Employment and Workplace Relations, the Dept of Education, Science and Training, and the Australian Federal Police.
