Vehicle check point in Dhi Qar

The last patrol undertaken by Australian forces in Southern Iraq left Tallil on 31 May to undertake a counter-improvised explosive device (IED) mission along the main roads in Dhi Qar province.

The soldiers from Combat Team Waler’s ‘Victor 1-3’ patrol conducted observation posts, vehicle check points and mentored Iraqi security forces.

Joint Australian, U.S. and Iraqi patrols like this one significantly reduced IED attacks in the region.

‘Victor 1-3’ patrolled up until the last moment, completing its two-day security mission on 1 June by driving up to a parade at Camp Terendak to signal the end of Australian operations in Southern Iraq.

Senior Australian and Coalition commanders, and Iraqi leaders, welcomed the patrol and thanked the soldiers of Overwatch Battle Group (West) - 4 for their contribution to the stable security environment in the two provinces.

The redeployment of Australian Forces and Equipment is well advanced and will be completed, as planned, by mid-year.
