Boarding operations from HMAS Anzac
The boarding party from HMAS Anzac conducted a security sweep of dhow 'Deema', a tug that regularly sails to the oil terminals. But under the supervision of US Marines, Iraqi Marines have taken more responsibility for security around the platforms.
Under the command of CAPT Ian Middleton HMAS Anzac has been deployed to the Persian Gulf to assist in the detection and interception of vessels in Iraqi waters which are suspected of undertaking illegal activities.
The 118m, 3600-tonne Anzac Class frigate has assisted in the protection of Iraq’s offshore assets including oil platforms that ensure the country’s economic future and generate revenue to support reconstruction and rehabilitation.
The platforms pump up to A$13.8 million worth of oil each day, equating to 85 per cent of Iraq’s gross national product.
During her six-month tour HMAS Anzac conducted investigative queries of merchant vessels, boardings and security sweeps.
Thus far the ship has conducted 19 security sweeps of vessels approaching oil terminals and 206 routine queries of vessels.
