AATT-I right on track

Australian soliders in Iraq are continuing to help build the capability of the Iraqi Security Forces through training and mentoring programs.

The Australian Army Training Team in Iraq (AATT-I) has trained in excess of 16,500 Iraq Army personnel since the project began in 2004.

The AATT-I is providing the Iraqi Security Forces with the skills, ethos, leadership and discipline to become an effective and self-reliant force, capable of providing security to the people of Iraq.

Now in its eighth rotation, the AATT-I comprises around 100 personnel. It incorporates Australian Army and Air Force members, who provide a mentoring and advisory role for the Iraqi instructors and commanders.

One of the simple but extremely effective improvements the Aussies have brought to Taji is running a 'Bakery Course' for Iraqi Army personnel.

This initiative provides Iraqi Army personnel with the skills they need to bake basic bread products in the field, enhancing the Iraqi Army's ability to support elements deployed away from their bases.

Through initiatives such as these, the AATT-I hope to provide an enduring contribution to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq.
