Chief of Army and General Petraeus visit Overwatch Battle Group

The Chief of Army, Lieutenant-General Peter Leahy, joined a night patrol in southern Iraq that was conducted by soldiers and armoured vehicles of the Overwatch Battle Group (West)-3.

Lieutenant-General Leahy mounted an Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) for a three-hour patrol of an area around Tallil Air Base in Dhi Qar province, southern Iraq.

The Chief of Army joined a night patrol conducted by elements of the Battle Group Reserve which is equipped with ASLAVs and Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicles.

General Petraeus told the Australian soldiers they are doing an excellent job helping the Iraqi Security Forces stabilise the situation in the region, as well as helping villages and towns with important community development projects that improve the standard of living for local people.

Approximately 515 personnel, drawn mostly from Darwin's 1st Brigade, make up the Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Three (OBG(W)-3). The Battle group is helping the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Provincial Governments build a secure and stable Iraq. OBG(W)-3 operates in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces as part of the Multi National Force - Iraq (MNF-I)
