Battle Group Tiger on the prowl

Lieutenant Colonel Tony Rawlins officially handed over command of the Overwatch Battle Group (West) to Lieutenant Colonel Jake Ellwood during a ceremony at Australia’s Camp Terendak on the Ali Air Base at Tallil in Dhi Qar.

The handover ceremony was attended by more than 20 Iraqi and Coalition soldiers, including Brigadier Sa’ad Ali Aaty Al-Harley, commander of the 3rd Brigade, and Colonel Chris Claydon, Commander 1 Mech Brigade.

Lieutenant Colonel Ellwood, the commanding officer of Battle Group Tiger, said his soldiers have trained hard for the past three months in preparation for this deployment.

He said his battle group looks forward to the task of supporting the Iraqi Security Forces and to maintain the security environment in Al Muthanna and Di Qar provinces, which are both under Provincial Iraqi Control (PIC)

Approximately 500 personnel, drawn mostly from Darwin's 1st Brigade, make up the Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Three (OBG(W)-3). The Battle group is helping the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Provincial Governments build a secure and stable Iraq. OBG(W)-3 operates in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces as part of the Multi National Force - Iraq (MNF-I).
