Iraqi Army Training at As Samawah

Australian troops serving in southern Iraq as part of OPERATION CATALYST have conducted some low level training for soldiers from the Iraqi Army based in the Al Muthanna province.

The training program for the soldiers from the Iraqi Army’s 1st and 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, was conducted at two barracks on the outskirts of As Samawah by troops from the Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Two.

The four-day program focused on further refining the light infantry skills of the Iraqi soldiers and included vehicle check points, search techniques and physical training.

Approximately 500 personnel, drawn mostly from Darwin's 1st Brigade, make up the Overwatch Battle Group (West) - Two (OBG(W)-2). The Battle group is helping the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and Provincial Governments build a secure and stable Iraq. OBG(W)-2 operates in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar provinces as part of the Multi National Force - Iraq (MNF-I).
